Bio/CV: 

Dr. Marie Manikis is an Associate Professor and William Dawson Scholar at the Faculty of Law of McGill University where she researches and teaches in the areas of Criminal Justice, Sentencing, Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure. She is also a member of McGill’s Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism, the International Centre for Comparative Criminology, and an Associate Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law. 

In 2014, she completed a doctorate in law at the University of Oxford, which examined comparative dimensions of victims’ rights and remedies. Her research is interdisciplinary and comparative and analyses various aspects of prosecutorial discretion and state accountability, forms of citizen participation in criminal justice, as well as bail, sentencing and punishment. She has published her work in leading peer-reviewed journals including the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, Public Law, and the University of Toronto Law Journal and presented at several conferences, seminars, and continuing legal education sessions for lawyers and judges. 

Professor Manikis has won several awards for her scholarship and was cited by various courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada and the Court of Appeal of England and Wales. She has also provided policy and consultation reports for governmental bodies, including the Department of Justice Canada, the Ministry of Justice in England and Wales, and the Canadian Senate. She is often consulted by the media and is a member of the Women’s Legal Education & Action Fund Law Program Committee, which advises on litigation.
