Bio/CV: 

Anya/Jiaqi Lao is an Associate Professor at the Law School and the College of Criminal Law Science at Beijing Normal University. She is a graduate of Peking University Law School (LL.B. and PhD).  She was previously a visiting scholar at CSLS from 2012-2013. She writes and teaches in the fields of criminal law, criminal justice and criminology with a special interest in sentencing equality and penal policy. She is the founder of the Center for Empirical Research in Criminal Justice and Criminology at Beijing Normal University. By conducting field research in Chinese prisons, she helped China’s Supreme Court evaluate the National Reform of Early Release. She also advised China’s Ministry of Justice on the National Survey on Recidivism. Her first book, The Recidivist Premium: between Norms and Facts, won the National Award for Outstanding Books in Criminal Law. She has published dozens of papers in the leading journals in her field. Her current major project focuses on mass incarceration in the United States from a comparative perspective.
