Kathleen (Kate) Sullivan, PhD, professor emerita of anthropology, California State University Los Angeles, is a sociocultural anthropologist specializing in legal and political anthropology. She focuses on democratic and bureaucratic governance practices in ocean and coastal zones, the political ecology of changing ocean uses, ocean conservation, ocean law and policy, and knowledge-sharing practices among ocean scientists. Her current book project examines the public processes engaging with the potential development of industrialized offshore wind energy extraction along the Oregon coast. She also studies the politics and governance of freshwater systems in the western US. She currently conducts ethnographic research on the West Coast of the US, and has conducted ethnographic research in British Columbia, southern Chile, and Galveston Bay, Texas, on ocean uses and politics.
