Pedro de Almeida Pires Camargos is a researcher and PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. He is a member of the research group Systems Theory and Social Critique (CNPq/Brazil) and affiliated with the research project Security Governance in the Neoliberal City (USP/Brazil). Prior to his stay at the CSLS, he was a teaching assistant in Sociology and Prison Studies at the University of São Paulo. He holds a Master’s degree in Sociology and a Law degree, both from the University of São Paulo. His research lies at the intersection of sociological, political, and legal theory. His primary interests include security and penal policies, state violence, political processes, and the relationship between democracy and authoritarianism.
His current work examines the role of the Brazilian Federal Government in recent years in reshaping policies and legislation to deepen the militarization of domestic security. Additionally, it investigates the implications of these changes for Brazilian democracy, particularly in relation to the rise of authoritarianism over the past decade. During his time at the CSLS, he will conduct comparative research on trends in the militarization of security, the use of state violence as a political tool, and the emergence of far-right movements in both Brazil and the United States.
